Order : Clostridiales
Family : Clostridiaceae
Genre : Clostridium
Type : Clostridium sporogenes
Scientific name
Clostridium sporogenes
( Metchnikoff 1908) Bergey et al. 1923

Clostridium sporogenes is a gram-positive , rod-shaped, spore-forming, motile bacterium of the genus Clostridium . It grows under mesophilic , anaerobic conditions at a pH of 5.7 to 8.5 (optimally pH 7). It occurs in human and animal intestines, the soil, and seawater and freshwater sediments. Because of their close relationship and similar properties, strains of C. sporogenes are used as a substitute for C. botulinum in the determination of D values to ensure the commercial sterility of canned food.
