Cloud Cult is an indie rock band founded by singer-songwriter Craig Minowa in 1995 in Minneapolis, Minnesota . The name comes from a prophecy from a North American indigenous sect. Craig Minowa: “It's a sect of ancient North American indigenous prophecies that have been eerily accurate so far. There's an incredibly interesting analysis in the prophecies of the balance between technology and nature. In a nutshell, the prophecies indicate that human kind will go through a massive transition due to inability to control some of the unexpected aspects of technology. Those that survive will be those that know how to live off the land. I used it as a project name when I wrote the album "Who Killed Puck?" We weren't a live band back then, it was just a studio project. But as new albums came together and the project turned into live performance I decided to stick with it. "

history

Cloud Cult was founded by Craig Minowa in 1995 when he recruited cellist Sarah Young, violinist Shannon Frid, painters Connie Minowa and Scott West, bassist Shawn Neary, and drummer Arlen Peiffer to work on his solo projects. However, he never signed a contract with a record company, but published on Earthology Records, a self-founded non-profit label that pays great attention to environmental compatibility.

In 2002, Craig Minowa's two-year-old son Kaidin died. Craig Minowa retired and wrote over 100 songs, some of which appeared in Lost Songs from the Lost Years , which also appeared in 2002.

They Live on the Sun was completed in 2003 and reached number 1 on the college radio station charts. In January 2004 Mara Stemm joined the band as a bassist. In 2004 Aurora Borealis won a Minnesota Music Award for "Album of the Year" with Prince and Paul Westerberg. Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus was released in 2006, the album was rated 8.3 by Pitchfork. In 2007 the Denver Post named the album The Meaning Of 8 "one of the 10 best albums of the past decade".

Cloud Cult released the album Feel Good Ghosts (Tea-Partying Through Tornadoes) on April 8th, 2008. Craig Minowa said that Feel Good Ghosts may be the final album: “I don't think there's going to be another Cloud Cult album for a while. It could be never, I don't know. "

A documentary film about the band called No One Said It Would Be Easy was released in spring 2009.

One of the most defining features of the band's live performances is the live painting by Connie Minowa and Scott West. During a performance, each of the two paints a picture, which is then auctioned off at the end.

In 2013 the new album Love was released and the band went on a North American tour.
