Spanish Cup (2): 1984, 1990

Club Baloncesto Saragossa (Spanish: Club Baloncesto Zaragoza), also known under the long-term sponsor name CAI Zaragoza , is a Spanish basketball club from the Aragonese capital, Saragossa . The first team played in the first division from 1981 to 1996 and was at times one of the strongest teams in the country. Due to financial problems, the club withdrew from professional basketball in 1996 and has only operated junior and amateur teams since then.

history

CB Zaragoza was founded in 1981 as a spin-off from CN Hélios , a sports club that had already competed in the first Spanish league and competed in the Korać Cup . The new club established itself right away in the top field and was one of the founding members of the new league association Asociación de Clubs de Baloncesto in 1983 . In the third season the Aragonese won their first major title, in the Spanish Cup the team prevailed 81:78 in the final against FC Barcelona . CAI Zaragoza reached the semi-finals both in the play-off for the Spanish championship and in the Korać Cup of the 1983/84 season . From 1985 to 1989, the team placed in the top field in the league and reached the round of the last four in the play-off for the title four times in a row.

CAI Zaragoza achieved the next success in the 1989/90 season, again the team prevailed in the final of the Spanish Cup, this time with 76:69 against Joventut de Badalona . In 1990/91, this also entitled them to take part in the European Cup Winners' Cup for the second time . After victories in the round of 16 against Steiner Bayreuth , the team reached the round of eight, in which they prevailed against well-known opponents such as PAOK Thessaloniki , Hapoel Galil Elyon and Red Star Belgrade . After a semi-final victory against Cholet Basket , CAI Zaragoza met PAOK Thessaloniki again in the final and lost just 72:76.

In the following years, the Aragonese managed to get into the final of the Spanish Cup two more times, in 1992 they lost to CB Estudiantes with 56:61 and in 1995 the team lost 80:88 against TAU Vitoria . The 1995/96 season ended CAI Zaragoza in seventh place in the championship, but they lost their license due to financial difficulties. The club then withdrew from professional gaming and concentrated on youth work and amateur sports. The first team plays in the Primera División Nacional , the fifth division in Spain.

Basket Zaragoza 2002 was launched in 2002 as the successor to CB Zaragoza . Like its predecessor, the new club bears the name CAI Zaragoza due to sponsorship from the credit institute Caja de Ahorros de la Inmaculada and also plays in the traditional club colors red and white, but has no personal or institutional connection to CB Zaragoza.
