Clyde River , Nunavut Territory , is a settlement with about 900 inhabitants (95% of them Inuit ) on the northeast coast of Baffin Island on the banks of Patricia Bay . The Inuktitut name is Kangiqtugaapik (ᑲᖏᖅᑐᒑᐱᒃ), "pretty little sea bay" ( Baffin Bay ).

The river, after which the settlement is named, comes from the west from the area of Sawtooth Mountain (approx. 337 m), circles the settlement area to the north and flows into Patricia Bay from the northeast.

The surrounding fjord world has been inhabited by Inuit or their ancestors for about 2,000 years, and 1,000 years ago Vikings crossed Baffin Bay from Greenland and are likely to have stayed here for some time. Has mapped the area by Robert Bylot and William Baffin in 1616. In 1820 crossed whalers, mainly from Scotland on to bowhead whales to hunt. After the decline of whaling in the early 20th century, trade picked up and the Hudson's Bay Company established a trading post on the Clyde River in 1924. During the Second World War, a US weather station, which has since been abandoned, was built at Cape Christian, 10 kilometers from the Inuit settlement and directly on the sea coast. Today's Clyde River was only created between 1967 and 1970; Better water supply and suitable terrain for an airplane runway were the reasons for the increasing relocation of the settlement to the opposite side of the bay.

There is a scheduled flight connection ( First Air ) with Iqaluit , Resolute Bay and Pond Inlet .
