Coatepec is a city in the Mexican state of Veracruz . The name means "hill of snakes" in Náhuatl . Coatepec is the administrative seat of the Municipio Coatepec .
Coatepec is located about 10 kilometers southwest of Xalapa-Enríquez , the capital of the state, in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada . A four-lane main road connects the place with Xalapa.
Within the municipality there are four small rivers with the following names: Pixquiac, Pintores, Sordo and Hueyapan. All together flow into the Río Pescados, which flows into the Gulf of Mexico at La Antigua .
Coatepec is considered a very humid place. The annual rainfall is 1764.9 mm. The annual average temperature is 19.2 degrees. Usually the maximum temperature never exceeds 30 degrees, even in summer.
Coatepec is often called the coffee capital of Mexico due to the numerous coffee plantations around the place .
Since 2006 Coatepec has also been included in the list of Pueblo Mágicos .
