history

The entrance gate of HM Prison Pentridge

Before the arrival of the Europeans, the Wurundjeri , an Aboriginal tribe , lived in the area around today's Coburg . Coburg was first explored by Robert Hoddle between 1837 and 1838.

In 1850 the "HM Prison Pentridge" prison was built. The prison was known as "Bluestone College" through the "Bluestone" mines in which the prisoners broke stones to build roads. In 1997 the prison was closed and partially demolished to make space available for housing. Only the prison gate remained.
