Cochlostoma patulum is a land-living snail species from the family of the forest cap snail (Cochlostomatidae) in the order Architaenioglossa ("old bandworm").

features

The right-hand winding case is comparatively small with a height of 5 to 8 mm and a width of 2 to 3 mm. It has 7½ to 9 strongly convex whorls. The sideline is often slightly concave. The housing is ribbed, there are around 7 to 10 ribs per millimeter. On the last rounds, the ribbing becomes more irregular and almost disappears. The color of the case varies from reddish gray to whitish; it has no stains.

The soft body is reddish gray with fine black spots and only about 4 mm long.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of the species extends from southern France to northern Italy ( Liguria ). The animals live there on rocks or in cracks in the rock, on dry meadows, and more rarely in old stone walls.

Taxonomy

The taxon was established in 1801 by Jacques Philippe Raymond Draparnaud in the combination of Cyclostoma patulum . Wilhelm Kobelt then placed the species for the first time in the genus Cochlostoma and in the subgenus Cochlostoma (Auritus) Westerlund, 1883. Today the species is assigned to the subgenus Cochlostoma (Turritus) Westerlund, 1883.
