Coenonympha Symphita is a butterfly ( butterfly ) from the family of Edelfalter (NYMPHALIDAE), which occurs in the Near East.

description

Coenonympha symphita has a brownish-ocher-colored or slightly orange upper wing surface with a not sharply demarcated gray border and a blurred, dark point near the tip of the forewing and thus resembles the little meadow bird ( C. pamphilus ). The undersides of the forewings are also very similar with a white nucleus and light-rimmed eye spot near the wing tip, but they are more brightly orange in color. The underside of the hind wing is yellow-brown, broadly light gray at the edge with a submarginal row of six very small ocelles , with a chip green approaching the roots.

The subspecies karsiana is on average slightly larger, the ocelle in the forewing apex is significantly larger below and also forms a rudimentary black point on top. On the upper side of the hind wing usually two to three black ocelles with a light edge on the underside clearly shine through, the other ocelles on the underside shine through. The ocelles on the underside of the hind wings are about twice as large and sometimes the ocelle is doubled in the anal angle, making a total of seven.

Distribution and way of life

Coenonympha symphita occurs from northeast Turkey to southwest Georgia . It flies in June and July on moist low mountain ranges and subalpine meadows on the Kars plateau and in the Lesser Caucasus at an altitude of 1,300 to 2,300 meters. The caterpillars feed on annual bluegrass ( Poa annua ).

Systematics

Coenonympha symphita was first described by Julius Lederer in 1870 in the Annales de la Sociéte Entomologique de Belgique . The name is sometimes spelled incorrectly as symphyta , it is derived from the Greek σύν with and φύω grow and means the closely related species .
