Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) is a research institution that consists of several laboratories in Cold Spring Harbor , New York , on Long Island . The main research areas are cancer research , neurobiology , plant genetics , genomics and bioinformatics . The research center operates a graduate program (Watson School of Biological Sciences) . Nine Nobel Prize winners have worked at the CSHL so far.

In 1890 the laboratory was established as a division of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences . In 1904, the Carnegie Institution of Washington established the Station for Experimental Evolution in Cold Spring Harbor. In 1921 the laboratory was reorganized into the Carnegie Institution Department of Genetics . James Watson (co-discoverer of the structure of DNA) was director and later chancellor of the laboratory for 35 years. In 1994, the Australian cancer researcher Bruce Stillman was appointed director to succeed Watson, and he has been president since 2003 (as of 2019).

The institute organizes the Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology every year .
