Ernst Peter Fischer (born January 18, 1947 in Wuppertal ) is a German science historian and science journalist.

Live and act

Ernst Peter Fischer grew up in Barmen , studied mathematics, physics and biology at the University of Cologne and received his doctorate in 1977 under Max Delbrück at the California Institute of Technology . In 1987 he completed his habilitation in the history of science at the University of Konstanz and was appointed associate professor . Until 2011 he taught the subject in Konstanz, then at Heidelberg University . From 1989 to 1999 he was editor of the Mannheim Forum (as successor to Hoimar von Ditfurth ).

Fischer is also involved in freelance activities as a science mediator and consultant, including for the Foundation Forum for Responsibility as editor (with Klaus Wiegandt ) of Mensch und Kosmos (2004) and The Future of Earth (2006).

He criticized the bestseller of the Hamburg literature professor Dietrich Schwanitz Bildung. Everything you need to know (1999), because the natural sciences only appear as marginal areas there. Fischer reacted to this with his book The Other Education (2001), in which he presented the knowledge of the natural sciences as important for general education .

As a science journalist, Fischer wrote articles for the magazines GEO , Bild der Wissenschaft , Weltwoche and the FAZ . Under the umbrella of scienceblogs.de he runs a blog on philosophical-scientific questions and current events. He is a member of the Liechtenstein PEN Club .

His wife worked as a doctor in the pharmaceutical industry.

Awards

Fischer's scientific and journalistic achievements have received several awards.
