Colen Campbell
Colen Campbell (June 15, 1676 - September 13, 1729 ) was a pioneering architect of Scottish descent who spent most of his career in England. He is considered the founder of the Georgian style .
Vitruvius Britannicus
His most important publication, Vitruvius Britannicus, or the British Architect… appeared in three volumes between 1715 and 1725. It was mainly a collection of copperplate engravings of English buildings and building designs, mainly by Inigo Jones , Christopher Wren , Campbell himself and by other outstanding architects of his time. The buildings were shown in views, sections and floor plans, occasionally also in perspective. Campbell's selection mainly took into account buildings influenced by Palladianism and contributed significantly to its spread in England. This collection is considered to be the first in English after "The First and Chief Groundes of Architecture" by John Shute .
