Coleocephalocereus fluminensis is a species of the genus Coleocephalocereus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet refers to the locality in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
description
Coleocephalocereus fluminensis grows semi-prostrate with dark green shoots branching at the base , the tips of which are turned upwards. The shoots reach lengths of up to 3 meters with diameters of up to 10 centimeters. There are 5 to 17 straight ribs . The single central spine is initially brownish yellow and later turns gray. The 4 to 14 yellowish radial spines also gray with age. Flowering shoots have different spines. The cephalium, which is up to 5 centimeters wide and 1 meter long , consists of plenty of white wool and bristles.
The flowers are whitish to pale pink and up to 7 inches long. The slender, top-shaped fruits are glossy purple and 2 to 3 centimeters long.
Systematics, distribution and endangerment
Coleocephalocereus fluminensis is distributed in the Brazilian states of Rio de Janeiro , São Paulo , Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo . It was first described as Cereus fluminensis in 1838 by Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel . Curt Backeberg placed the species in the genus Coleocephalocereus in 1942 .

- Coleocephalocereus fluminensis subsp. decumbens
Coleocephalocereus fluminensis is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Least Concern (LC) ", d. H. classified not endangered. The subspecies Coleocephalocereus fluminensis subsp. In 2002, decumbens was considered " Endangered (EN) ". H. endangered. During the 2010 update, the subspecies was not reassessed and was removed from the red list.
