Colin Gonsalves (born May 24, 1952 ) is an Indian activist who works as a lawyer for the defense of human rights. In 2017 he received the alternative Nobel Prize for his commitment . Gonsalves is the founder of the Human Rights Law Network (HLRM).

Career

Colin Gonsalves graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay and worked as an engineer . During his work, he discovered his interest in law and began studying law in 1979. He completed this in 1983 and worked as a lawyer at the labor court . In 1984 he moved to the high court in Bombay. He has been working at the Indian Supreme Court since 2001 .

Human Rights Law Network

Gonsalves founded the HRLN in 1986 with three co-founders. Initially, the network was particularly active in the field of labor law, but increasingly advocated the interests of poor people and the implementation of human rights in India. In 30 years, HRLN has grown into the largest organization of its kind in India with 21 offices and 250 full time employees, 110 of whom are lawyers.

Gonsalves has participated in many lawsuits as the “lawyer for the weak” at the Indian Supreme Court. Through his Human Rights Law Network, he and his employees advocate human rights. At the Indian Supreme Court, Gonsalves contested, among other things, a right to food, which is now enshrined in the Indian Constitution , compensation payments for the relatives of people killed in Punjab , and the lifting of the immunity of Indian soldiers .
