from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collin Leslie Broholm (born September 20, 1961 in Copenhagen ) is an American experimental solid-state physicist and professor of physics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore .

Broholm studied physics at Denmark's Technical University and received his PhD from the University of Copenhagen in 1988 . As a post-doctoral student he worked at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey until 1990 before moving to Johns Hopkins University as Assistant Professor of Physics, where he became Associate Professor in 1994. He has been a full professor there since 1997, and has also been the Gerhard H. Dieke Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy there since 2008.

Broholm studies the magnetic properties of quantum materials , mainly with the help of neutron scattering . His research interests include materials with one-dimensional spin correlations, heavy fermion systems, and geometrically frustrated spin systems. Broholm also made significant contributions to the construction of two neutron spectrometers at the Center for Neutron Research at the National Institute for Standards and Technology. Since 2008 he has been the director of the Institute for Quantum Matter at Johns Hopkins University.

For his achievements in experimental solid-state physics, Broholm was named a Presidential Faculty Fellow by the National Science Foundation in 1994 . He also became a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2004 and received the Sustained Research Award from the Neutron Scattering Society of America in 2010. He was also named Moore Experimental Investigator in Quantum Materials by the Moore Foundation in 2014.
