Colm O'Gorman (born 1966 in County Wexford ) is an Irish politician .

Life

O'Gorman was born in County Wexford in 1966, where he spent his childhood. His father was the farmer Seán O'Gorman. He and his family moved from the country to the town of Wexford . O'Gorman's father was a member of the Irish Fianna Fáil party and ran in the 1969 and 1973 elections.

As a teenager, between the ages of 15 and 18, O'Gorman was sexually abused by the Roman Catholic clergyman Seán Fortune . The cases of abuse ranged from 1981 to 1983. After leaving school, he began to be politically active. He became a member of the Progressive Democrats party and was involved in the organization Amnesty International in Ireland, on whose board he later rose as director.

In the late 1990s, O'Gorman began publicizing his sexual abuse by a clergyman of the Roman Catholic Church and filed a criminal complaint with the Irish police against clergyman Seán Fortune. In the course of the following years further cases of abuse of the clergy became known.

In 1998 O'Gorman sued the Bishop of the Diocese of Ferns and the Apostolic Nuncio in Dublin. In 1999, O'Gorman founded One in Four in London to help victims of abuse. In 2002 an Irish sister organization was founded in Dublin.

In 2003, O'Gorman won the diocese in court and was awarded € 300,000 in reparation. O'Gorman documented his trial for the BBC with the film Suing the Pope . In 2005, as a politician, he was responsible for the processing of sexual abuse cases by the Irish government with the so-called Ferns Report . In 2006, O'Gorman directed the documentary series Sex Crimes and the Vatican for the BBC .

O'Gorman announced in April 2006 that he would be running in County Wexford in the 2007 elections. He was appointed to the Irish Senate on May 3, 2007 after the death of Senator Kate Walsh . In the 2007 elections he was defeated as a candidate for the Progressive Democrats and was not appointed to the new Senate.
