Seán Fortune (* 1954 in Gorey ; † March 13, 1999 ) was a priest of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland who took advantage of his position to gain access to children and to sexually abuse them .

Fortune was assaulted during his training at St Peter's College in Wexford , Diocese of Ferns , but it is not clear whether the diocese was aware of it, as noted in the Ferns Report . In Dublin, Fortune ran a public relations media business.

Fortune has served as minister in the localities of Fethard on Sea in County Wexford , Belfast and Dundalk . Complaints were made at all three locations. Letters to Bishop Donal Herlihy and his successor Brendan Comiskey were ineffective.

One of the victims was the future politician Colm O'Gorman , who became active in 1995. He later received € 300,000 in compensation from the church.

Sean and Sheila Cloney summed up a number of cases. Fortune has been charged with 66 sexual abuse cases involving 29 victims. On March 13, 1999 , Fortune killed itself with a mixture of drugs and alcohol.

The documentary Suing the Pope , broadcast by the BBC in March 2002, dealt with the Seán Fortune case.

“The Catholic Church did not tell the locals that Fr Fortune was a brutal, predatory pedophile. They organized delegations to two Bishops - wrote to the Papal Nuncio and the Vatican. The church promised it would do something. It never did. "
