Colwyn Castle

Colwyn Castle is an abandoned low castle near the village of Llansantffraed in the old Welsh county of Radnorshire , now part of Powys . The castle was built in the Middle Ages on the site of a Roman fort.

In 1196 the troops of Rhys ap Gruffydd took the castle during his campaign against the Normans . Ralph de Mortimer had it rebuilt in 1242 to protect his rule Maelienydd , which he had conquered shortly before.

Today only ramparts and moats are visible from the castle. It is considered a Scheduled Monument .
