McCloud guides us through his own book as a stylized cartoon character. In doing so, he begins to tell about the historical development of this medium and thus first of all to show a general definition of what makes a comic. Then he gives insights into the formal aspects and the special language in comics. The book itself uses these mechanisms in order to bring the theories closer to the reader in a simple and clear way.

Reviews and reception

  • Many of McCloud's conclusions sparked fruitful discussion in the professional world. His discussions of “iconic” art and the concept of induction in the space between the panels became recognized theses.
  • Andreas C. Knigge describes the book as one of the most important publications of the 1990s, delivering the most complex analysis and theory of the medium to date.
  • The volume was supplemented in 2000 by Reinventing Comics (German 2001 to reinvent comics ), followed in 2006 by Making Comics (German 2007 to make comics ).
  • McCloud lectures on the theses that he puts forward in his books.
