Johann Friedrich Ruopp

Johann Friedrich Ruopp (* February 1672 in Strasbourg ; † May 26, 1708 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German hymn poet and pastor .

Life

The son of the shoemaker Daniel Ruopp and Katharina Reinthaler was baptized on March 1, 1672 in Strasbourg Cathedral . He studied theology at the University of Jena , where he turned to Pietism . After completing his studies, he became a vicar in Lampertheim , and later a pastor in Goxwiller . There he secretly published the hymn book Jesus songs . In 1705 he was accused of sectarianism because of his pietistic convictions and expelled from Goxwiller. Finally he worked at the Francke Orphanage in Halle, among other things as an inspector for poor students and as an adjunct of the theological faculty.

You can only find the song Renew me, O Eternal Light (EG 264) in the Evangelical Hymnal . Some of his songs are printed in Freylinghausen 's hymn book from 1704.
