Commands & Colors: Ancients is a strategy game developed by Richard Borg , Pat Kurivial and Roy Grider from GMT Games that was released in 2006. It is based on Borg's Command & Colors system, which is similarly used in some of his other games, such as Memoir '44 , BattleLore and Battle Cry . It simulates the " fog of war " and the uncertainty that can be found on real battlefields.

Commands & Colors: Ancients focuses on the 3000 BC era Chr. – 400 AD

Furnishing

The main game contains wooden blocks in two colors for the Roman / Syracuse armies and Carthaginian armies, as well as sheets with stickers that represent different types of units. These must be placed on the blocks before the first game. 16 small wooden blocks, which represent “victory banners” / victory points, and 7 plastic dice which also have to be provided with stickers. The game also contains a rule book, a scenario book, and two "cheat sheets" which give the players a quick overview of the capabilities of the units and modifiers. The cardboard game board is held in a hexagonal grid . Further hexagonal terrain pieces are laid out on the board according to the instructions for the respective scenario. Also included are the command cards that allow the players to make the respective moves on the board.

Gameplay

The units are arranged on the board according to the illustrations and scenario descriptions in the scenario book. Each player receives command cards according to the “command value”, which is described in the chosen scenario. Often the players have a different “command value” and thus receive different amounts of cards. The players take turns playing their cards. These usually designate parts of the battlefield, either right or left flank , the center or a combination of several in order to command one or more units in this area. These can then be moved according to their modifiers and / or ordered into combat.

There are also special cards that allow specific actions. This continues until a player has achieved the number of victory points required for the scenario. Victory points are usually awarded for completely eliminated enemy units or leaders.

Scenarios

The game includes fifteen historical battle scenarios, e.g. B. Cannae , Zama , Cynoscephalae , Beneventum , Bagradas , Trebia , Metaurus Baecula , Ilipa , battle on the Ticinus .
