Commerce is an underground metro station on line 8 of the Paris Métro .

location

The metro station is located in the Quartier de Grenelle in the 15th arrondissement of Paris . It is located alongside the Rue du Commerce at the level of the Rue Lakanal.

Surname

It is named after the Place du Commerce and the Rue du Commerce (German: Street of Commerce). It was the main shopping street of the municipality Grenelle, which was independent until 1859, and it is still very densely populated.

History and description

The metro station started operating on July 27, 1937 when the section from La Motte-Picquet - Grenelle to Balard of line 8 opened. On that day, the old route from La Motte-Picquet - Grenelle to Porte d'Auteuil was abandoned and this section of the route was assigned to line 10 .

Since the Rue du Commerce was not wide enough to accommodate a train station with two side platforms between the foundations of the rows of houses on either side of the street, a separate station was created for each direction of travel. They are shifted from one another in the longitudinal direction. Each station has only one platform, the opposite track is only used for trains in the opposite direction. A similar solution only exists in Paris at the Liège underground station . While stopping there at the first station in the direction of travel and then driving through the next one without stopping, it is the other way around at Commerce subway station: the first station is passed through, the platform is in the second.

Both stations are under elliptical , white-tiled vaults and have vertical side walls. They were built from the start with a length of 105 m, sufficient for seven-car trains. The two entrances are located on the Place du Commerce, they are marked by candelabra designed by Adolphe Dervaux in the Art Deco style with the word METRO.

vehicles

Despite the length of the platforms, only five-car trains were ever used, as five stations on line 8 are still only 75 m long. Trains of the Sprague-Thomson type ran until 1975 . In that year MF 67 trains came on the line, which were replaced from 1980 by the MF 77 series .
