Commissario delle Antichità

The Commissario delle Antichità ( overseer of antiquities , including papal antiquarian called) was for antiques in the Papal States in charge.

The office was in 1534 by Pope Paul III. introduced and existed until the end of the Papal States in 1870. The Commissario was appointed by the Pope, he was subordinate to the Papal Camerlengo . He was the chief curator of monuments in Rome and in the entire Papal States, responsible for all excavations, excavation licenses and export licenses for antiquities.
