Francesco Bartoli

Francesco Bartoli (born April 27, 1670 in Rome , † 1733 ibid) was an Italian engraver and antiquarian ("antiquarian").

life and work

Francesco Bartoli was the son of the engraver Pietro Santi Bartoli , whose pupil he was and whose antiquarian work he continued. Only a few engravings are known of him. So he worked with his father at Le pitture antiche delle Grotte di Roma e del sepolcro de 'Nasonj , Rome 1706. In addition, he made a stab of designed by Sebastiano Cipriani created catafalque for John Sobieski , King of Poland, in Santo Stanislao dei Polacchi in Rome 1696 and two engravings in Domenico de Rossi , Studio d'architettura civile sopra gli ornamenti di porte e finestre tatti da alcune fabbriche insigni di Roma con le misure piante modini, e profili. Bartoli was also active as a draftsman, for example for the antiquarian John Talman in 1712 he supplied drawings of church works of art from the treasure of S. Peter in Rome (today in the British Museum ); Mediated through this, he made drawings for Richard Topham (now in Eton College ) and Thomas Coke, Earl of Leicester (now in Holkham Hall ).

From 1700 to 1733 he succeeded his father in the post of overseer of the antiquities in the Papal States, the Commissario delle Antichità . He campaigned for the preservation of the Pantheon , the Colosseum , the Triumphal Arches, the Cestius Pyramid and other monuments and tried to prevent the illegal export of antiquities.
