Pietro Santi Bartoli

Pietro Santi Bartoli (also Pietro Santo Bartoli or Piersanto Bartoli , Latin Petrus Sanctus Bartolus ) (* 1635 in Perugia ; † November 7, 1700 in Rome ) was an Italian draftsman, engraver and antiquarian ("antiquarian").

Life

Bartoli came to Rome as a teenager around 1643, where he first studied painting with Jean Lemaire and Poussin , but then switched to engraving. Bartoli devoted himself primarily to the reproduction of works of ancient art and can be seen as the main representative of the archaeological direction of Roman copper engraving. He made numerous drawings after antiquity, which were engraved and summarized in books, the text of which was often written by the antiquarian Giovanni Pietro Bellori (1613–1693). He published works on, for example, ancient reliefs ( Trajan's column , Marc Aurel column ), Roman painting , which he wanted to present in a kind of corpus, ancient graves, portraits, gems and lamps . Bartoli's engravings served the widespread dissemination of knowledge of the ancient monuments of Rome and are today a primary source for numerous objects that are no longer preserved in the original, e.g. B. the paintings of the Nasonian grave .

Bartoli belonged to a circle of antiquarians, artists and art and antiquity lovers in Rome in the 17th century, including Poussin, Giovanni Pietro Bellori, Cassiano dal Pozzo and Carlo Antonio dal Pozzo as well as the cardinals Francesco Barberini and Camillo Massimo . After Bellori's death, Bartoli held the post of overseer of antiquities in the Papal States, the Commissario delle Antichità, from 1696 until his death . He was also Bellori's successor antiquarian to Queen Christina of Sweden , whose extensive collections he supervised and published in part.

His son was Francesco Bartoli (1670–1733), who succeeded his father as an engraver and antiquarian.
