Carlo Camillo Massimo , also Camillo Massimi (* July 20, 1620 in Rome , † September 12, 1677 ibid) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from the urban Roman nobility and belonged to the Massimo or Massimi family . Camillo Massimo was the eldest of the three children of Giacomo Luigi Massimo and his wife Giulia Serlupi. His baptismal name was Carlo , after the death of his uncle Camillo (called il Cieco ) in 1640, he added his first name to his own in order to be able to inherit a Fideikommiss worth about 250,000 scudi .

As the nephew of Marchese Vincenzo Giustiniani , Camillo Massimo visited the house and the art collection of his uncle frequently from early childhood. At the age of ten he began his drawing lessons with Nicolas Poussin . He studied at La Sapienza University , where he obtained a doctorate. Already in his youth he became papal house prelate , then in 1651 cleric of the Apostolic Chamber .

Pope Innocent X appointed him on December 15, 1653 as the Latin (titular) Patriarch of Jerusalem . He was ordained bishop on January 4, 1654 in the Roman church of San Silvestro al Quirinale by Cardinal Fabio Chigi ; Co-consecrators were Archbishop Giulio Rospigliosi , who later became Pope Clement IX, as well as Taddeo Altini OSA , Bishop of Civita Castellana e Orte and papal sacristan . On January 8, 1654, Camillo Massimo became papal assistant to the throne . On January 16, 1654, the Pope sent him to Spain as a nuncio , where he served until 1658 and met Diego Velázquez , whom he promoted. During this time he tried to broker a peace treaty between Spain and France, but without the participation of the Ambassador of the Republic of Venice . This led to a protest from Venice to the Pope and Camillo Massimo was recalled from the nunciature. After that he lived in Roccasecca as well as in exile, until the pontificate of Clement IX. ended with his death in 1669. The College of Cardinals appointed him governor for the conclave 1669-1670 .

In the consistory of December 22, 1670 , Clement X created him cardinal priest . The cardinal's hat and the pro illa vice to the titular church raised Diakonie Santa Maria in Domnica he received on 23 February 1671. He opted on 30 January 1673 to the titular church Sant'Eusebio . Camillo Massimo took part in the 1676 conclave , which Pope Innocent XI. chose. On October 19, 1676 he opted for the titular church of Sant'Anastasia .

Camillo Massimo died on September 12, 1677 around 3 p.m. in his Roman palace near the Quattro Fontane and was buried in a family grave in the Lateran basilica .
