Giovanni Battista Visconti

Giovanni Battista Antonio Visconti , also Giambattista , (born December 26, 1722 in Vernazza , † September 2, 1784 ) was an Italian archaeologist .

From 1768 Giovanni Battista Visconti succeeded Johann Joachim Winckelmann as papal prefect of antiquities ( Commissario delle Antichità ). He reorganized the Museo Pio-Clementino and published the first volume of a catalog of the museum's antiquities that he had compiled. In later years he was supported by his son Ennio Quirino Visconti , who continued his father's work after his death. His sons Filippo Aurelio (1754–1831) and Alessandro Visconti (1757–1853) were also active in the field of archeology; his son Filippo Aurelio succeeded him as Commissario delle Antichità.
