history

The Compo company was founded in 1956 in Münster under the name Holländisch-Deutsche Düngemittel-Gesellschaft Todenhagen & Sprenger KG by EH Sprenger and was the first manufacturer to offer ready-made potting soil under the brand name Compo Sana.

In 1967 Salzdetfurth AG took over 50% of the company shares. In 1971, Wintershall acquired the 50 percent share of the company's founder, Sprenger, in "Salzdetfurth Compo-Werk GmbH & Co. KG". In the same year, Salzdetfurth concentrated its own specialty fertilizer division at Compo ; Among other things, this led to Compo also selling the special and liquid fertilizers from Chemische Fabrik Kalk in Cologne (CFK) from 1971 and thus entering the professional market (today Compo Expert). When Salzdetfurth was renamed in 1972, the 50 percent Salzdetfurth share in Compo went to Kali und Salz (K + S). Kali, Salz and Wintershall each held 50% of Compo. In 1976, Wintershall ceded its 50% Compo shares to its main shareholder BASF , which in 1986 took over Compo as part of its diversification strategy at the time.

In 1999, K + S acquired Compo back from BASF, which now concentrated on its core business in chemistry. K + S merged the business activities of its subsidiary Fertiva and parts of the Compo professional business (today Compo Expert) on July 1, 2009 in the company K + S Nitrogen.

In autumn 2011 Compo was sold to the private equity investor Triton . Triton subsequently separated the consumer business (today: Compo) from the business for professional users (today: Compo Expert). Compo Expert GmbH was founded on September 26, 2012 with the entry in the commercial register.

In May 2015 Compo Expert GmbH was taken over by the XIO Group , also a private equity investor. The XIO Group sold Compo Expert to Grupa Azoty on November 26, 2018 .
