Compsoptera opacaria is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae).

The wingspan of the moth is 34 to 45 millimeters. The wings vary in basic color from light brown to reddish brown to dark gray. All color variants show a clear diagonal line on the front wings, which extends from the apex to the middle of the front edge. Its color can be white or blackish. The intensity of the basic color varies greatly depending on where it was found. Animals whose food plants grow on ferrous rock show predominantly reddish tones. Sometimes a dark center can be seen. The apex of the forewings is usually particularly pointed in the female butterflies. The hind wings are light gray-brown without drawing. The antennae of the males are combed on both sides, those of the females are thread-like.

Adult caterpillars are brown-gray and often show two parallel, interrupted, blackish or reddish back lines.

Geographical distribution and habitat

Compsoptera opacaria occurs in southwestern Europe, in Spain , Portugal , France and Italy . The species prefers warm shrubbery landscapes.

Way of life

The moths fly in one generation and can be found from August to October. You visit artificial light sources at night . Your caterpillars feed on the leaves of various plants. These include broom ( Genista ), thyme ( Thymus ) and juniper species ( Juniperus ) and Heather ( Calluna vulgaris ).
