The Cambridge History of China

The Cambridge History of China is a nascent since 1978 forthcoming book series of the Cambridge University Press (CUP) to the older and more recent history of China . It has been described as the "greatest and most comprehensive history of China in English".

The series was originally conceived by the British historian Denis C. Twitchett and the American historian John K. Fairbank in the late 1960s, and publication began in 1978. The second volume is due for publication in November 2019. The full story should be fifteen volumes, with some volumes in two parts. A Chinese translation of the books is also available.

A separate volume published in 1999, The Cambridge History of Ancient China by Michael Loewe and Edward L. Shaughnessy , complements the series by covering pre- Imperial times .
