Congolapia is a genus of African cichlids found in the central Congo Basin . The generic name is made up of congo and tilapia . Two of the three species in the genus originally belonged to tilapia , the third was newly described with the introduction of the genus.

Congolapia species become 15 to 17.5 cm long. The body height is 37.4 to 48.4% of the standard length . The densely scaled caudal fin in combination with the spade-shaped teeth in the upper and lower jaw is a diagnostic characteristic of the genus. On the first ceratobranchiale (a bone of the upper gill arch ) there are 8 to 13 gill rakes .

Congolapia species are light olive-green, gray, bluish, yellowish or red-brown basic color. The throat and stomach are lighter. A black, bluish or yellow stripe runs between the eyes and the corner of the mouth. The lips are whitish, bluish or turquoise in color. There is a black spot on the gill cover. A tilapia stain may be present or absent.
