The Connolly station ( Irish Stáisiún Uí Chonghaile ) is a train station and is located in Amiens Street in Dublin , Ireland . All parts of the main building from the 19th century are listed (monument number 130).
history
The station was built from 1840 to 1850 to the design of John MacNeill and William Deane Butler. At first it was called Dublin Station , but a short time later it was renamed Amiens Street Station . As one of four of the largest Dublin terminal stations , the station initially belonged to the Drogheda and Dublin Railway Company .
In 1966, in memory of the 1916 Easter Rising, train stations in Ireland were renamed after the executed leaders of the uprising. This station was named Connolly Station after James Connolly .
Towards the end of the 20th century, the station was renovated by architects from Iarnród Éireann . Among other things, a new entrance foyer was added.
The tracks are in an elevated position so that they can be guided without crossing. There are seven platform tracks in the passenger station. Of these, four are end-to-end tracks connected to the northeast, tracks 2 to 4 are in a platform hall. These are mainly used for trains to and from Belfast and Sligo . The three through tracks on the north side continue across the Liffey to Tara Street station in the center and on the east coast route via Dun Laoghaire and Wexford to Rosslare Harbor . For the trains of the Dublin Area Rapid Transit (DART), the three through tracks and head track 4 are electrified with 1.5 kV DC voltage. As a rule, the DART trains run on tracks 6 and 7 on the northern platform.
