Conquest of Paradise is a song by the Greek composer Vangelis and sung by Dana Winner . It dates from 1992 and appeared on the album 1492: Conquest of Paradise . The song achieved great fame as the entry song by Henry Maske .

history

The song was the main melody for Ridley Scott's period film 1492 - Conquest of Paradise . Like the film, the song initially had little success after its cinema release. On October 8, 1994, the boxer Henry Maske used the song to march into the ring in the world championship match against Iran Barkley . About 15 million television viewers saw the fight. As a result, sales of the single and album soared in early 1995. The single was number one in the German single charts for 11 weeks and received triple platinum in Germany , the soundtrack LP five times gold. The album was awarded gold and platinum in over 17 countries.

Music and lyrics

The music has signs that point to Spain. There are also archaic features. On the one hand, this becomes clear through the monotonous rhythm ( ostinato ) that Ravel's Boléro also has. Furthermore, Vangelis has adopted the Folia sentence model only slightly changed.

Chord progression of the late folia:

/ dm ___ / A7 ___ / dm ___ / C ___ / F ___ / C ___ / dm ___ / A7 ___ /
/ dm ___ / A7 ___ / dm ___ / C ___ / F ___ / C ___ / dm A7 __ / dm___ /

Chord sequence in "Conquest of Paradise":

/ dm ___ / A ___ / dm ___ / C ___ / F ___ / C ___ / Bb ___ / A ___ /
/ dm ___ / A ___ / dm ___ / C ___ / F ___ / C ___ / Bb ___ / A ___ /

The lyrics of the song were written by Guy Protheroe and sung by the English Chamber Choir ("Englischer Kammerchor"). It is just as archaic and sounds like Latin , but is not written in any meaningful language. The text is as follows:

In noreni per-i-pe,
in noremi co-ra,
tira mine per-i-to,
ne do --- mina.

In romine tir-meno,
-ne romine to-fa,
imaginas pro-me-no
per i - mentira.
