Conrat Seyfer

Conrat Seyfer (also: Sifer or Syfer , * in the 15th century ; † in the 16th century ) was a German sculptor and builder.

life and work

Conrat Seyfer, who came from Sinsheim an der Elsenz , was probably a brother of Hans and Lenhart Seyfer ; Karl Halbauer also considers a relationship to be possible and probable, but does not dare to make such a precise assignment. However, in an essay published in 2009, he considered it likely that Conrat Seyfer was one of Hans Seyfer's masters. In the article about Hans Seyfer in the New German Biography of 2010, also written by Karl Halbauer, however, one can read about him: “There are no source statements about S's year and place of birth. The assumption of an apprenticeship with Conrat Sifer or with Hans Bilger von Worms cannot be proven on the basis of his oeuvre. "

In 1489 Seyfer worked in Schlettstadt . There he designed a magnificent rood screen with a spiral staircase for the Church of St. George ; the plant was destroyed in the course of the French Revolution . In 1490 he moved to Strasbourg , where in 1491 he became a citizen and master builder of the cathedral . Possibly it is identical to the "Conrat dem bildhouwer", who designed the - also not preserved - Laurentiusmarter above the eastern transverse portal of the Strasbourg cathedral, or with "bildhawer Conrat Swop" in a Strasbourg fire order from the end of the 15th century mentioned.

According to Thieme-Becker, a guard's head from the Holy Sepulcher of Schlettstadt Minster and two prophet half-figures from Strasbourg Minster may belong to Conrat Seyfer's works. According to Halbauer, Conrat Seyfer in Strasbourg was mainly occupied with decorating the south transept facade of the cathedral; the man with the sundial from 1493, for example, can be attributed to him.

Furthermore, he could have worked on the stone reliefs in the cloister of Worms Cathedral .

Perhaps figures of the Holy Sepulcher in the Abbey Church of St. Peter and Paul in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne and the tombstone of St. Ludan in the Church of St. Ludan in Hipsheim were made by Conrat Seyfer.

A crucifix in Maulbronn Monastery with a date from 1473 and the signature "CVS" is also attributed to him.
