Consolea macracantha is a species of plant in the genus Consolea from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet macracantha means '(Latin macracanthus) large prickly'.

description

Consolea macracantha grows very branched and reaches stature heights of up to 3 meters and more. A trunk of up to 15 centimeters in diameter is formed, which is reinforced with numerous, splaying thorns up to 15 centimeters long. The shiny green, flat, smooth shoot sections are elongated to ovate. There are one to four strong, awl thorns that are whitish and up to six inches long. The thorns can also be missing.

The often numerous orange-yellow flowers have widely spread bracts .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Consolea macracantha is common in Cuba .

The first description as Opuntia macracantha was in 1866 by August Grisebach . Alwin Berger placed them in the genus Consolea in 1926 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The development of the populations is considered stable.
