Constant Claes
Constant Guillaume Claes (born April 4, 1826 in Tongeren ; † February 10, 1905 in Hasselt ) was a Belgian portrait, genre and church painter.
After graduating from high school in Tongeren, he studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen under the supervision of Nicaise de Keyser .
He continued his artistic training at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles , where he received a special award at the end of the academic year 1844/45 at the age of 19. Several study trips to Italy and Spain complete his artistic training.
Constant Claes was co-founder of the Société Scientifique et Littéraire de Tongres (Science and Literature Society of Tongeren).
In addition to numerous portraits, he created religious works and genre scenes from everyday life (old men, monks, musicians or farmers). He was involved in the restoration of the Notre-Dame Basilica in Tongeren, where he led the reconstruction of the choir and the stained glass windows.
