Label history

Continental Records was one of the family of small, independent, but short-lived record companies that sprang up in the United States in the mid-1940s. The label was founded by Donald H. Gabor around 1942; the company was based at 263rd West 54th Street in New York. At that time Don Gabor was still serving in the US Navy and his uncle was running the company, while Anton Mervar acted as a consultant . The label's small catalog of 78s contained recordings by important musicians of this era, jazz and ethnic music from different countries, which was appreciated by the immigrants, but also some classical recordings.

Gabor recorded many sessions in the nearby jazz clubs on 52nd Street and the Café Society . Continental Records is also remembered for Charlie Parker's early recordings with the Clyde Hart All-Stars ( “I Want Every Bit of It” / “Sorta Kinda” ) with Dizzy Gillespie , Trummy Young , Don Byas and others in January 1945.

From 1944, the Continental Records catalog included recordings by Louis Armstrong ( When the Saints Go Marching in ), Harry James , Enoch Light , Slam Stewart , Ethel Waters , Cozy Cole , Hot Lips Page , Dorothy Donegan , Clarence Williams , Johnny Guarnieri , Hank Jones , Leonard Feather , Edmond Hall and his Cafe Society Orchestra, Timme Rosenkrantz , Mary Osborne / Mary Lou Williams Girl Stars, JC Heard & His Cafe Society Orchestra and the young Sarah Vaughan with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie.

Numerous recordings from the shellac era were later released on seven 10-inch long-playing records on the Remington label in various compilations. These were:

  • (R-1024) Hot Jazz With Sarah Vaughan (with Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Flip Phillips , Bill de Arango , Max Roach , published Fall 1950)
