Location of Copahue

Copahue is a small settlement in the Argentine Andes near the Chilean border in the Neuquén province . It is best known for its springs, which the natives of the area believed to have healing properties. Located in an inhospitable part of the world, Copahue was for a long time only accessible with great effort. The place can now be reached by paved roads.

The name Copahue comes from the language of the indigenous people, the Mapuche Indians, and means "place of sulfur". The Copahue volcano ( 2900  m ) of the same name is not only named after the settlement, but also provides the livelihood for the population:

Copahue, at an altitude of 2000  m , is the world's highest thermal bath . The high altitude produces a unique microclimate that alone is said to have a healing effect. Here, however, there are also the hot springs, which deliver fango, a high-sulfur thermal water and sulfur vapors. The altitude also means that the spa can only be maintained during the summer months (beginning of December to mid-May). In winter, the systems are usually buried meters high under snow.

The hot springs with up to 16 g sulfur per liter of water, the fango and the sulphurous vapors that are available within the spa facilities are primarily used to treat autoimmune diseases .
