Copiapoa decorticans is a species of plant in the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Copiapoa decorticans first grows individually and later forms loose groups with a diameter of up to 1.5 meters. The yellowish green shoots that divide at the base are up to 40 centimeters long and longer and reach a diameter of four to eight centimeters. The 14 to 20  ribs are only thickened around the areoles. The areoles are about an inch apart. When they are young, they are initially covered with sparse gray wool, then later naked. The thorns are brown when young. With age they become light straw-colored, sometimes with a dark tip. There are one to four protruding, short and strong central spines up to one inch long or slimmer and up to two inches long and eight to twelve radiating radial spines up to 1.5 inches long.

The wide open yellow flowers are up to three centimeters in diameter. The flower bud is reddish. The fruits are unknown. The seeds are glossy black brown.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa decorticans is common in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta between Quebrada Botija and north of Paposo .

It was first described in 2002 by Nigel Paul Taylor and Graham J. Charles .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Critically Endangered (CR) ", d. H. listed as critically endangered.
