description

Copiapoa mollicula sometimes grows individually with large taproots, but usually in groups. The shoots are connected to the root with a thin neck. They are depressed spherical and rarely protrude above the soil surface. They are gray to brown, sometimes reddish, and measure 3 to 6.5 centimeters in diameter. The 10 to 16  ribs are only perceptible as flat, spirally arranged humps. They show furrows that run from the areoles to the base of the wart. Up to a central spine with a length of up to 1.5 centimeters is present. One to ten radial spines, sometimes completely absent, are up to 5 millimeters long.

The yellow flowers are 1.5 to 2.2 inches long. The fruits are very small and round.

Distribution and systematics

Copiapoa mollicula is common in Chile in the Región de Atacama and the Región de Antofagasta between Chañaral and south of Puerto Viejo on coastal hills.

It was first described in 1963 by Friedrich Ritter .
