Copiapoa montana is a species of the Copiapoa genusin the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet montana comes from Latin and means 'mountain loving, occurring on mountains'.

description

Copiapoa montana usually grows in several heads and forms smaller groups. The spherical to short cylindrical shoots are gray-green. They are up to 20 centimeters high and reach a diameter of 5 to 10 centimeters. The 10 to 17  ribs are only 7 to 8 millimeters high and slightly humped. The areoles are large and covered with brownish wool. They are 5 to 10 millimeters apart. The thorns are strong, straight or slightly curved and 1.5 to 2 centimeters long. They all have the same length and are mostly brown-red to black in color. One to three central spines and four to seven radial spines are distinguished.

The yellow flowers appear in the apex. They are up to four inches long. The fruits are spherical in shape. They measure up to one centimeter in diameter and are light green to reddish or brownish in color.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa montana is common in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta near Taltal .

It was first described in 1960 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonyms are Copiapoa hypogaea var. Montana (F.Ritter) GJCharles (1998) and Copiapoa montana subsp. oliviana (F.Ritter) Doweld (2002 incorrect name ICBN -Article 6.6, 11.4).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
