Copiapoa serpentisulcata is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet serpentisulcata comes from Latin and means 'serpentine furrowed' and stands for the wavy furrows between the ribs of the species.
description
Copiapoa serpentisulcata usually forms cushions with a height of up to 60 centimeters and a diameter of up to one meter. The flattened, spherical shoots are light brown to brownish in color. They have a yellowish crown, are densely thorny and seven to ten centimeters in diameter. The 18 to 33 ribs are wider than they are high and are clearly broken up into humps. The circular areoles are yellow, later graying. The light brown thorns , which also turn gray with age, are straight. One to four awl central spines with a length between 1 and 2 centimeters and six to eight thick, protruding radial spines with a length of between 1 and 1.5 centimeters are distinguished.
The yellow flowers are 2.5 to 3 inches long and fragrant. The fruits are covered with scales.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Copiapoa serpentisulcata is common in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta north of Chañaral .
It was first described in 1960 by Friedrich Ritter . Synonym is Copiapoa serpentisulcata var. Castanea F. Ritter (1980).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
