Copiapoa solaris is a species of the genus Copiapoa in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet solaris comes from Latin and means 'sunny' and stands for the occurrence of the species on the Chilean coast, which is mostly covered with fog.

description

Copiapoa solaris mostly forms huge posters up to a meter high and a diameter of up to two meters. The cylindrically shaped, gray-green shoots have a diameter of eight to twelve centimeters. The 8 to 12 ribs are not humped and up to 3.5 centimeters high. The very large areoles are narrow or up to five millimeters apart. The strong, straight or curved thorns are yellow at first and turn grayish with age. They interlock. There are two to five central spines with a length between 2 and 6 centimeters and seven to ten radial spines with a length between 1.5 and 5 centimeters.

The yellow flowers have a pink center. With a length between 2.5 and 3 centimeters, they are often hidden by thorns in the crown. The flower tube is conspicuously covered with thick wool. The fruits are just as woolly and up to 1.5 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Copiapoa solaris is common in Chile in the Región de Antofagasta in the area of El Cobre.

It was first described in 1961 as Pilocopiapoa solaris by Friedrich Ritter . It was not until 1980 that Friedrich Ritter introduced the species to Copiapoa . A synonym is Copiapoa ferox Lembcke & Backeb. (1959, nom. Invalid ICBN -Article 37.1).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
