The Coppergate helmet or Yorck helmet is a helmet that was found during construction work in Coppergate ( York ) in Great Britain in 1982 and, according to its design, belongs to the family of the Nordic comb helmets . It is thought to date from around the middle of the 8th century, possibly also from the latest 7th century and is on display in the Yorkshire Museum in York.

description

The helmet

The Coppergate helmet has a semicircular, elongated helmet bell made of iron . The helmet bell is driven . A brass strip is placed over the top line , which forms a cross with a second band. The lower edge of the helmet and the eye cutouts are also surrounded by a brass strip. The nose iron is firmly riveted to the bar that runs over the helmet and the bars that run around the eyes . It is narrow on the forehead, briefly becomes wider and then narrower again. It is immobile and slightly bent forward. A dragon's head is worked out at the transition from the head bar to the nose iron . The nose iron and the brass strips are provided with engravings throughout , which are particularly artfully worked out on the nose iron. The cheek flaps are attached to the helmet by a hinge and are crescent-shaped on the front. They are also surrounded by a brass bar. The cheek flaps are long and cover the face to below the chin.

The helmet bears the Latin inscription:

IN NOMINE: DNI: NOSTRI: IHV: SCS: SPS: DI: ET: OMNIBVS: DECEMVS: AMEN: OSHERE: XPI
