Coral Bay (German: Coral Bay ) is a small town on the coast of Western Australia , 1132 kilometers north of Perth and 139 kilometers south of Exmouth , on the Indian Ocean . The locality is mainly determined by tourism to the Ningaloo Reef .
history
The first Europeans to come to the bay were the sailors on the schooner Maud , who landed in 1884. Around 1896 a wooden jetty and a goods depot were built. In 1915 the place was named Mauds Landing . The first house was built in 1933. The village played an important role in the development of the northwest region of Australia as a depot for incoming and outgoing goods such as wool and sheep until 1947. The jetty was then dismantled. Coral Bay was named after a hotel in the area in 1968.
The electricity for Coral Bay is generated by a wind-diesel hybrid system.
Tourist information
The weather is mild. The place exists mainly because of tourism and fishing and consists of 20 houses, a resort hotel, two restaurants and two caravan parks. There is also a backpackers - Hostel .
Next to the place is the Ningaloo Reef , which is visited by tourists for its opportunity to dive and snorkel among corals and fish. The marine animals can also be viewed with boats that have a glass bottom. Other water sports such as canoe rentals are offered in Coral Bay.
Giant manta rays can be found in the bay from March to June and whale sharks from May to July . Humpback whales can be found from June to October and sea turtles hatch from the sands of the bay from February to early March.
