Cornel Onescu

Cornel Onescu (born January 28, 1920 in Gogoşu , Dolj County , † November 15, 1993 in Bucharest ) was a politician of the Romanian Communist Party (PCR).

Life

Onescu became a member of the PCR in 1942 and became a functionary of the communist youth organization Uniunea Tineretului Comunist (UTC). He later joined the Ministry of the Interior, where he was promoted to head of the cadre department . In the mid-1950s he studied in the Soviet Union . In addition, he was a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PCR, head of a sector in the Department of Ideology and Organization of the Central Committee and was awarded the medal for the 40th anniversary of the founding of the PCR in May 1961.

On July 27, 1965 Onescu, who was considered a confidante of Nicolae Ceaușescu , was appointed as the successor to Alexandru Drăghici as Minister of the Interior in the government of Prime Minister Ion Gheorghe Maurer . He held this office until April 24, 1972 and was then replaced by Ion Stănescu , the previous President of the Council for State Security (Consiliului Securitatii Statului). During this time, from April 1969 to April 1972, he was also a member of the Defense Council of the Socialist Republic of Romania , the highest body of the Socialist Republic and the main body for national defense issues.

Between March 1978 and September 1979 he was First Vice President of the State Planning Commission with the rank of State Secretary.
