Andrei Konstantinowitsch Voronzewitsch ( Russian Андрей Константинович Воронцевич ; born July 17, 1987 in Omsk , RSFSR ) is a Russian basketball player . Vorontsevich has played for CSKA Moscow since 2006, with whom he has won the Russian championship every year and in 2008 the ULEB Euroleague , the top European club competition. Since the Olympic Games in 2008 he has also been an integral part of the Russian national team, with which he won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 2011 . Despite his height of 2.07 m, which predestines him as a player on the front court near the basket, he is a tweener in his style of play and takes around 40 percent of his throw attempts from a distance behind the three-point line .

Career

Vorontsevich moved in 2006 from the club from Novosibirsk , in whose youth teams he had played until 2005, to the dominant Russian basketball club CSKA in Moscow . The series champion has won all Russian championships since 1992 except for 2001 and 2002. With Vorontsevich they also won the Russian cup competition in 2007 and 2010 and thus the double in Russia. In 2010 they also won the Eastern European VTB United League , which was played for the first time , after having won the test tournament of this association called the Promo Cup in 2008.

Euroleague

In the continental club competition Euroleague Woronzewitsch reached the final in 2006/07 with CSKA as defending champion, which was just lost to Panathinaikos Athens . The 19-year-old Vorontsevich himself was not used during the Final Four tournament. In the ULEB Euroleague 2007/08 they reached the final again and defeated Maccabi Tel Aviv as in 2006 , although Voronzewitsch was again not considered by coach Ettore Messina in the Final Four. The same was repeated in the ULEB Euroleague 2008/09 , where Panathinaikos Athens again had to admit defeat at the Final Four in the O 2 World Berlin . In the ULEB Euroleague 2009/10 he was used by the new coach Yevgeny Paschutin in almost all games, but this time they lost the semifinals in the Final Four against the eventual title holder FC Barcelona and reached third place after a narrow win in extra time against KK Partizan Belgrade . From the latter opponent from Belgrade came the new coach Duško Vujošević , who is considered a supporter of young players. Under Vujošević, national player Voronzewitsch also had an increased playing time, but this time they were eliminated in the preliminary round of the ULEB Euroleague 2010/11 , which resulted in Vujošević's dismissal, and for the first time since 2002 did not reach the Final Four.

National team

For the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing , Vorontsevich was appointed to the final squad of the men's national team for the first time. The surprise European champion from 2007 , however, retired prematurely after only one victory in the preliminary round before the quarter-finals. At the 2009 European Championships , the defending champions won only once in the preliminary round with the opening game and then lost to a young German national basketball team . Nevertheless, it was enough to move into the intermediate round, in which you won all games, but lost in the quarter-finals against the eventual finalists Serbia and ultimately reached seventh place. At the 2010 World Cup , Vorontsevich was the national team's main rebounder . Until the quarter-finals, they lost only one game against hosts Turkey , but were eliminated there against the eventual title holder United States and again took seventh place. At the EM 2011 they even won all games up to the semi-finals, including a new edition against Serbia in the quarter-finals. There they lost to France and were able to secure the bronze medal with a victory in the game for third place over the surprise team of the Macedonia tournament .
