The Defense Council of the Socialist Republic of Romania ( Romanian Consiliul Apărării al Republicii Socialiste România ) was founded on April 7, 1969 and existed until the end of the rule of the Romanian Communist Party (Partidul Comunist Român, PCR) after the revolution on December 22, 1989 . He was replaced in 1991 by the Supreme Council for National Defense .

The Defense Council was one of the highest bodies of the Socialist Republic and the main body for national defense issues. It was chaired by the General Secretary of the Central Committee of the PCR and the President of the State. Membership was usually tied to certain offices, so that the Prime Minister, Foreign, Interior and Defense Ministers and the chairman of the State Committee for Planning were usually members of the Defense Council. There were also a number of other members with important offices in government and party.
