Emil Bobu

Emil Bobu (born February 22, 1927 in Vîrfu Cîmpului , Suceava County , † July 12, 2014 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian politician of the Romanian Communist Party (PCR).

Life

Coming from a farming family , Bobu initially worked in agriculture after attending school and joined the PCR as a member in November 1945. Between 1954 and 1956 he completed part-time law studies at the University of Bucharest . He then became an official of the PCR and was President of the Council of Suceava County from 1961 to 1972. In May 1961 he was awarded the medal for the 40th anniversary of the founding of the PCR and was elected as a member of the Grand National Assembly.

His rise within the party hierarchy began after he was adviser to the Secretary General of the PCR, Nicolae Ceaușescu , between 1972 and 1973 . First he was Minister of the Interior between March 1973 and March 1975 as the successor to Ion Stănescu and in this capacity he was also a member of the Defense Council of the Socialist Republic of Romania , one of the highest bodies of the Socialist Republic and the main body for national defense issues. At the Eleventh Party Congress of the PCR in November 1974 he became a member of the Political Executive Committee.

Between March 1975 and February 1979 he was Secretary for Law and Military of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PCR and was also Vice President of the State Council at the same time, while Teodor Coman was the new Minister of the Interior. At the Twelfth Party Congress of the PCR in November 1979 , he was elected a member of the Permanent Bureau of the Political Executive Committee and, along with Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu, as well as Gheorghe Rădulescu and Constantin Dăscălescu, was one of the most undisputed and most powerful people on the party's top leadership body until the Romanian Revolution December 1989 .

In March 1979 he became Minister of Labor in the government of Prime Minister Ilie Verdeț and held this office until February 1981. From February 1981 to December 1989 he was Secretary of the Central Committee for Cadre and Organization. He was also Vice-Prime Minister between January and May 1982. Bobu was one of the closest associates of Ceausescu and next Manea Mănescu on the members of the party leadership, with this during the revolution on 22 December 1989 with a helicopter , the flight would take. He has received several awards for his services, including the Star of the People's Republic of Romania (1959) and twice the Order of August 23, and in 1981 he also became a Hero of Socialist Work. In addition, on October 21, 1975, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Infante Dom Henrique .

After the revolution, charges were brought against him. On February 2, 1990 Emil Bobu was sentenced to life imprisonment together with Manea Mănescu, Tudor Postelnicu and Ion Dincă. This sentence was later reduced to a ten-year prison sentence and a subsequent five-year loss of political rights.
