Manea Mănescu (born August 9, 1916 in Brăila , † February 27, 2009 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian politician.

biography

Mănescu was a member of the Romanian Communist Party (PCR) from August 1944 . From October 3, 1955 to March 19, 1957 he held the post of Romanian Minister of Finance. With a break of three years (1979 to 1982) he was a member of the Central Committee (ZK) of the PCR from 1960 until it was dissolved in 1989 .

During the reign of Nicolae Ceaușescu , Mănescu belonged to the Political Executive Committee of the PCR from 1969 to 1979 and from 1984 to 1989 . From 1967 to 1972 he was Chairman of the Economic Council and then from October 13, 1972 to February 27, 1974 Chairman of the State Committee for Planning. At the same time he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in 1972. From March 28, 1974 to March 30, 1979 he was Prime Minister of Romania.

Mănescu was also the head of the science and culture department in the PCR.

On December 22, 1989, he and Emil Bobu accompanied the couple Nicolae and Elena Ceaușescu on their attempt to escape in a helicopter from the ZK building. He was charged with cracking down on the uprising and sentenced to life imprisonment in February 1990. Since he now had a criminal record, his membership in the Romanian Academy was revoked according to the statutes.
