Gheorghe Pană

Gheorghe Pană (born April 9, 1927 in Gherghița , Prahova County ) is a former politician of the Romanian Communist Party (PCR).

Life

Pană, who came from a simple farming background, began training as a lathe operator in a Romanian- US American oil refinery in Ploiesti after attending school in 1941 . In October 1947 he became a member of the Partidul Comunist din România and the communist youth organization Uniunea Tineretului Comunist (UTM) and shortly afterwards an instructor in the department for agitation and propaganda of the Central Committee (ZK) of the UTM.

In 1951 he became head of the foreign policy sector in the Central Committee of Partidul Muncitoresc Român (PMR), then in 1958 head of the agitprop department and co-opted member of the office and secretariat of the PMR of Bucharest . In 1964 he took over the role of deputy head of the agitprop department in the Central Committee of the PMR and was then from 1966 to 1969 First Secretary of the Brașov PCR .

At the tenth party conference of the PCR from October 6 to 12, 1969 in Bucharest, he became a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee and secretary of the Central Committee of the PCR. At the Eleventh Party Congress of the PCR from November 24 to 27, 1974 , he resigned as a member of the Presidium of the Central Committee and in March 1975 also lost his position as Secretary of the Central Committee. At the same time he was a member of the Defense Council of the Socialist Republic of Romania from April 1970 to November 1975 and became a member of the State Council in 1969.

After his resignation from the Presidium of the Central Committee Pană was temporarily from January 1977 to February 1979 Minister of Labor and chairman of the union federation Uniunea Generală a Sindicatelor din România (UGSR). In this function he was sent by Nicolae Ceaușescu in August 1977 together with Ilie Verdeț to negotiate the miners strike in the Schiltal , but failed.

He was then mayor of Bucharest between 1981 and 1985 , before he was Vice-President of the State Council from 1985 to 1989 and President of the Committee on Affairs of the People's Councils from 1986 to 1989. Pană was also a long-time member of the Grand National Assembly , where he last represented the constituency of București-Tudor Vladimirescu until December 1989 .
